North Tyneside Councils sheltered housing workforce, who are now accredited as Dementia Friends.

Staff in North Tyneside Council’s sheltered housing service have been accredited as ‘Dementia Friends’ by the Alzheimer’s Society.

A total of 35 employees attended an information session last month on dementia to gain the accreditation, helping them to understand how to make people with dementia feel understood and included in their community.

Coun John Harrison, cabinet member for housing and environment, said: “North Tyneside is taking the lead in becoming a dementia-friendly place to live and we believe that we are the first local authority in the country to have a fully accredited sheltered housing service.”

Rob Stewart, regional communications officer at the Alzheimer’s Society, said: “The Alzheimer’s Society is determined to make life better for people with dementia, so this is great news and we’re delighted North Tyneside Council has picked up the baton.”
