Dome taster sessions for culture team
A COMMUNITY group keen to have a presence in Whitley Bay is to hold a number of taster sessions in the town from next year.
Culture Quarter have gained a lot of local support in the town over their hopes and plans for the iconic Dome at Spanish City and initially for Whitley Bay Playhouse.
But although the Whitley Bay-based group has yet to win favour with North Tyneside Council – who have put the Dome back onto the market – they are still interested in highlighting the various events, clubs and programmes they could bring to the town.
Among their hopes are to see Whitley Bay as the national venue for mind sports – such as chess, board games, card games and other similar games – as well as highlighting local theatrical groups, literature and a variety of musical genres.
From next month, they are putting on a wide and varied programme of events including taster days for mind sports, a ceilidh club, two folk music events, book club, showcase for local writers, taster days for community theatre, and theatre events.
The events will take place at a variety of locations in the town, which will be advertised closer to the event.
Gerry Beldon, one of the directors at Culture Quarter, said: "This programme will run up to the opening of the Dome, and it is our intention to continue to offer participation in all kinds of community, artistic and mind sports events from 2010 in the Dome.
"We plan to offer incubator spaces to new arts-based businesses, along
with business advice and support, from the Dome, to encourage employment and give an extra income stream.
"We are very excited about how these activities will contribute to the renaissance of Whitley Bay – the place will be buzzing."
He also urged residents who had other ideas of what events could be held in the town to get in touch.
Mr Beldon also thanked the 330 people who had signed Culture Quarter's 10 Downing Street petition earlier this year, which had now been passed on by the government to North Tyneside Council.
