A Whitley Bay funrunner has helped launch the build up to a charity event later this month.

Duncan Phin will join thousands of other athletes to take part in the Bupa Great North 10k on Sunday, July 13.

He joined Sunderland-born athlete Alyson Dixon, who will represent England at this summer’s Commonwealth Games, at Gateshead International Stadium to launch the event.

He will be running to raise funds for the Breathtakers OB Trust, a charity hoping to create a specialist clinic at the RVI in Newcastle.

The clinic will help co-ordinate research into Obliterative Bronchiolitis, a condition his son suffers from.

David Hart, communications director at organisers Nova, said: “In six years it’s grown into the biggest 10k running event in the north east, with thousands of runners, walkers and joggers taking part for different causes, many of whom will be using it as preparation for the Bupa Great North Run.”

Entries for the Bupa Great North 10k are open at www.greatrun.org/north10k
