A Roman soldier and 60 of his ‘trainees’ from a Whitley Bay school bowed to their ‘Empress’ this week.

Marine Park First School pupil Phoebe Dixon, seven, was ‘crowned’ Empress of the Wall by English Heritage last October following an online competition to engage young people with Hadrian’s Wall.

Since then Phoebe has been visiting English Heritage locations and blogging monthly for the national organisation about her days out.

One of her rewards included a visit from Roman soldier Joe Jackson to her school.

Teacher Fiona Robertson said: “The pupils had a great time with the Roman solider, learning about weaponry and armour and having the opportunity to take part in this session.”

“It helped them to appreciate so much more what life for a Roman soldier was really like.”

“This visit coupled with our visits to Hadrian’s Wall and obviously having Phoebe as the Empress of Hadrian’s Wall for the year, has really focussed the children and added that extra Wow-factor to our learning.”
