Ex-Newcastle United and Sunderland star to fundraise for Sir Bobby - Video

A FORMER Newcastle United player and graduate of Wallsend Boys Club has launched his own charity to raise money for two groups close to his heart.

Robbie Elliott has set himself the mammoth challenge of cycling from Portugal to Tyneside in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The 38-year-old’s route will take in all the football teams Sir Bobby managed throughout his career.

Friend and triathlete Phil Gray will join Robbie for the ‘Bike for Bobby’ challenge, from Lisbon to Newcastle, via Porto, Barcelona, Eindhoven, Ipswich, Fulham and Wembley.

Speaking at the launch of the charity on Tuesday, he said: “Everyone has been touched by cancer, whether it be a family member, friend or colleague.

“It was fantastic to work with Sir Bobby Robson and he did a lot for me and I wanted to give something back.

“It is a massive challenge, but I didn’t want it to be just a bike ride, I wanted it to be something different, something that would appeal to people.

“Hopefully it will and we will be able to raise lots of cash for the charities.”

Bike for Bobby will take place during October and the route will cover 3,500 miles over four weeks, meaning the pair will cycle up to 150 miles per day.

The route is set to be finalised once the fixture lists for the European clubs are finalised, and it’s hoped Robbie and Phil will be able to arrive at the home of Newcastle United on a home match day for a fitting celebration of their achievement.
