Extra parking spaces on way

WORK has started on a new scheme to create more parking spaces on the seafront at Tynemouth.

North Tyneside Council is hoping to increase the amount of spaces at Grand Parade by more than a third in time for the Easter weekend.

Work will also be carried out to improve road and pedestrian safety along the seaside strip.

The plan is to create an extra 77 bays, making 189 spaces in total, including seven disabled bays, at Beaconsfield car park, pictured, by early April.

There will also be six new bike loops for cyclists and a larger motorcycle parking area.

At the same time, the council will narrow the width of the road at Grand Parade, creating a standard-sized two-way road, in a bid to reduce traffic speeds.

Borough mayor Linda Arkley said: “We’ve listened to concerns about driving and parking issues in this popular spot and created this scheme as a solution.

“The work will create a safer seafront as well as much-needed extra visitor parking, bringing a real boost to the area.”

Work will take place on weekdays. Residents and visitors will still be able to use many of the bays at the car park, with cones being in place to section off parts and guide traffic along Grand Parade.

Improvements will also be carried out to Beverley Terrace in Cullercoats, including further improvements to parking and the installation of a puffin crossing and a pedestrian refuge.

It will coincide with other regeneration work in Cullercoats being undertaken as part of the wider coastal regeneration scheme.
