Fined for ‘unsightly’ advertising
A COMPANY has been fined for displaying illegal adverts from static trailers it placed around at locations in the borough.
A1 Recovery and Dismantlers Ltd, based on the West Sleekburn Industrial Estate in Bedlington, pleaded guilty to five separate offences of illegally advertising its services from trailers after being prosecuted by North Tyneside Council.
At North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court last Friday, the company was fined a total of £1,215.
The action taken by the council followed repeated offences by the company between June and October 2012 and its refusal to remove its trailer from locations in Wallsend, Benton, Whitley Bay and Shiremoor.
The council had received a number of complaints from local residents.
After the hearing, Coun George Westwater, cabinet member for community and regulatory services, said: “Not only is this type of advertising illegal and unsightly, it can also be a dangerous distraction for drivers passing by.
“Outdoor advertising must be controlled in the interest of public safety and consent sought by businesses where necessary.
“As a council, we are pleased that our action has been supported by North Tyneside magistrates and hope this case acts as a reminder and deterrent to others.”
