A new free car park has been created near Whitley Bay seafront.
The new facility has been created on the site of the former Whitley Bay library, which was relocated last year into the Whitley Bay Customer First Centre.
A total of 55 spaces are available, plus four new disabled bays, which complement two disabled bays and 15 spaces on the existing adjacent car park – creating a total of 70 spaces and six disabled bays.
Although parking is free, the same restrictions that applied at the library car park are in force – a maximum of two hours parking, with no return within four hours, from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 6pm.
New signage is still to be installed in the car park.
And the new facility has been welcomed by officials at North Tyneside Council as a boost for the town.
Mayor Norma Redfearn said: “I know that this additional parking will be welcomed by residents, visitors and businesses in Whitley Bay.
“It is another milestone in our commitment to the regeneration of the town.”
The project has been managed by Capita, on behalf of North Tyneside Council.
