A teacher is to keep on running as he aims to continue to raise money to buy new minibuses for a school

James Torbett, who works at Beacon Hill Special School in Wallsend, is training in preparation for a marathon of a fundraising challenge.

The Wallsend Harriers member is taking part in the London Marathon on April 19 to help raise money for the school’s £100,000 minibus appeal.

The school is looking to buy three new vehicles to replace thecurrent stock, which is getting old.

It will be the first time James has taken part in a marathon, but he has completed the Great North Run on several occasions.

“I have worked at Beacon Hill for many years and know what a difference the minibuses make to the pupils’ learning,” said James.

“It’s great that I can use my hobby of running to support the young people in this way.

“I need as many sponsors as I can so please contact the school for a form or go on the Just Giving website to support this great cause.”

Headteacher Helen Jones said: “We’re thrilled that James has proposed to support us in this way at a prestigious event such as the London Marathon.

“He will be running against greats such as Mo Farah but he will also be running for the school and the young people he works with every day.

“Although we can’t all get to London we’ll be cheering him on on the day.”

The school has so far raised more than £12,000 after starting the appeal last September.

Fundraising events have included a clothes swap, Christmas fair and raffle with a member of staff due to take part in a bunjee jump.
