PREPARATIONS for Europe’s biggest fun run are entering their final phase.

The Children’s Cancer Run, sponsored by Greggs, is now in its 31st year of raising money for the North of England Children’s Cancer Research fund (NECCR) at the Northern Institute for Cancer Research (NICR).

The run – at Newcastle Racecourse at Gosforth Park on Sunday, May 19 – will be officially launched this month.

Up to 12,000 runners will complete the five-mile course, raising hundreds of thousands of pounds in sponsorship, with more than £6m being raised over the years for research into children’s cancer.

Run chairman Chris Peacock said: “The fact that the run is in its 31st year is a testament to the dedication of the runners who join us every year to raise money for such a special charity.

“We’ve reached the stage now where children who ran with us right at the very beginning are running as adults and are bringing their own children along.

“Over the past few years charities have had a hard time trying to keep momentum and continue to raise money for worthy causes due to the unstable economy and I’m proud that the run has continued to take place each year and still attract so many thousands of participants.”
