Get fit with your pet this year
DOG owners are being encouraged to get fit with their pets.
Regional veterinary practice, Blythman and Partners, is urging people to help their pets lose weight by exercising them regularly.
Research has shown that on average, dog owners get more exercise walking their canine friend than someone with a gym membership so could help them lose weight as well.
Graham Chambers, senior partner and veterinary surgeon, said: "Exercise is a great way for owner and dog to bond and get fit together.
"However, before starting an exercise regime we recommend the dog is taken for a full check up at their local vets, where the owner will be able to discuss the most appropriate diet and exercise plan for the age, breed and size of their dog."
He added: "If the dog isn't used to a large amount of walks then owners should start off with smaller trips and gradually build up to jogging and longer walks.
"If they consistently continue with this then they should start to lose the pounds.
"But, owners must remember to keep it up after they have reached their target, as dogs require regular exercise.
"As a result of working out with their furry companions, owners are likely to enjoy more happy years with their dog and both will suffer less health implications, such as health disease and arthritis."
