Glowing report for children's services in North Tyneside

NORTH Tyneside children's services have been rated good in an Ofsted review.

The latest government inspection of the council's children's services has rated all aspects of its work as 'good' and highlighted some of its outstanding achievements in improving the lives and opportunities of its youngsters.

The Ofsted review praises North Tyneside's strong leadership, partnership working and clear focus.

Areas of good and outstanding practice highlighted in the report include:

A reduction in youth crime including a 60 per cent reduction in re-offending and 44 per cent reduction in first time offenders.

No permanent exclusions in primary or secondary schools and a 25 per cent reduction in secondary school fixed-term exclusions.

The proportion of learners in North Tyneside achieving five or more GCSE grades A* to C (including English and mathematics) in 2007 remains above the national average.

Structures for engaging children and young people and ensuring looked after children are involved in decisions about their lives.

The number of teenage conceptions has reduced by 16 per cent, a higher rate than that for similar areas.

A continuing decline in the number of mothers smoking in pregnancy and the number of children dying in their first year of life remains low.

The management of services for children and young people and its capacity to improve.

The extremely positive report builds on its Joint Area Review, undertaken in 2007, which placed North Tyneside's children's services amongst the top three performers in the country.

Coun Norma Redfearn, cabinet member for children, young people and learning, said: "We are very pleased with this positive assessment and will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure that children and young people in North Tyneside get the best start in life."
