The North East Better Health at Work awards, hosted by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, recognises workplaces that motivate their employees to develop a sustainable culture of health and wellbeing.

Organisations are assessed on a set of criteria, being awarded either a bronze, silver, gold or Continuing Excellence award.

And one of those to receive a gold award this year was Wallsend-based TyneMet College.

Sam Haley, director of learner services at the college, said: “TyneMet works hard to ensure that we provide a safe and healthy working and learning environment for both our staff and students.

“We value our staff and realise that we have a commitment to them to promote ‘better health at work’ and we will continue to support healthy lifestyle options to the best of our ability.

“Last year we were awarded a silver award, this year, receiving a gold award is fantastic and is testament to the commitment of the college’s continuous commitment to developing a health working and learning environment.”

The achieve the gold level, the college developed a three-year health and wellbeing strategy plus an action plan which included themed weeks, fitness challenges, health events, blood pressure and BMI checks and health advice.

Steven Chater, workplace health promotion specialist at the trust, said: “It’s been great working with the college and supporting them to develop their ideas and improve the health and wellbeing of staff, pupils and the local community.”
