Head’s pride at continued improvement

A HEADTEACHER has spoken of his ‘pride and delight’ at the improvement of pupils at his school.

Recently published performance tables for schools around the country showed continued improvement in state schools in North Tyneside.

And David Baldwin, headteacher at Wallsend’s Churchill Community College, was particularly delighted with his school’s performance in their GCSEs last year.

Overall, 100 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades, with 68 per cent of those getting the grades in English and maths – ten per cent above the national average.

The school was also ranked 183rd most improved in the country for GCSE results over the last three years, and in the top two per cent nationally for the improvement pupils make during their time at Churchill Community College.

Mr Baldwin said: “We help all of our students improve from the time that they join us in Year 7 to their achievement at GCSE in Year 11.

“Our ‘value added’ score this year means students make amazing progress with us from whatever starting point they join us in Year 7.”

The school also plays its part in helping the local community, as proved with Year 12 student Paul Baird, who was runner-up in the Lord Glenamara Prize.

And the school is also bucking the national trend by having more students stay on in education and going to university.

Mr Baldwin said: “The students really are inspired to aim higher.

“They are well supported by parents and staff to make the next step in their learning and they see the importance of this.

“They understand that they have a significant role to play in the community and this is underpinned by the excellent results they achieve.”
