A man is appealing for help putting together the history of a painting he has bought.

John Watson bought the large painting – which measures 8ft by nearly 6ft – two years ago from a relative and feels now is the time to find out more about the picture.

The painting, which had previously been on display at the Rex Hotel, was commissioned by the Whitley Bay Roundtable to commemorate the fancy dress ball in February 1961.

It was painted by Peter Morgan and signed in 1963.

John, of Whitley Bay, said: “I would like to hear from anyone who was at the ball and any names of people in the painting.

“I would also like any information about the artist.

“I remember seeing the painting as a young lad when I was in a boxing competition at the Rex and years later when nightclubbing there.”

He added: “It’s a lovely painting, it’s oil on canvass. Its in my kitchen as it’s too big to hang on the wall.

“I’d just love to find out more about it.”
