Illegal worker found in takeaway raid in Wallsend

A WALLSEND takeaway was raided by UK Border Agency officials on Monday night and a Bangladeshi man was arrested for not having permission to work in this country.

The Spice Palace in the High Street, Wallsend, is facing a possible fine and steps are being taken to have the man deported.

The raid followed intelligence reports.

And officers from the agency carried out checks on staff at Ho Buffet in Gallowgate, Newcastle, as well as the Wallsend takeaway.

When officers entered the Spice Garden, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi man was caught trying to leave by a rear door.

He was arrested and checks revealed he did not have the right to work in the UK.

Three people, two Chinese men aged 56 and 29, and a Malaysian woman aged 25, who did not have the right to work in the UK were found at Ho Buffet and were all arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.

Both businesses were issued with civil penalty notices of up to £10,000 per illegal worker – a potential total of £30,000 for Ho Buffet and £10,000 for Spice Garden

Wallace Wilson, of the UK Border Agency, said: “Employers who use illegal labour are cheating the taxpayer, undercutting honest employers and often exploiting some of society’s most vulnerable people.

“A role filled by an illegal worker also deprives a legitimate job seeker of an employment opportunity.

“I would urge anyone with detailed information about suspected illegal working to get in touch. We are determined to stamp it out.

“We are happy to work with employers to make sure they operate within the rules.

“However, the message to those who choose to operate outside the law is simple – our specially trained and dedicated officers will find you and you will pay a heavy financial penalty.”

The two businesses must now show that proper checks were carried out on the workers or face the financial penalty.
