An elderly couple are enjoying a warmer winter thanks to an initiative to heat up the borough’s households.

Eileen and Pierce Prosser used to dread the winter weather as they had no central heating and could not afford to have it installed.

But thanks to an energy efficiency partnership involving North Tyneside Council and Warm Zone, the couple – who have been married for 54 years – received a free central heating system.

The pair, both in their 80s, need to heat their ground floor flat in Whitley Bay properly due to growing health worries.

Pierce said: “I contacted Warm Zone to find out if we were eligible – it was so easy. There was not very much disruption at all, the staff cleared up after everything they did; it was a real first class job.

“The difference to our home has been remarkable, a 100 per cent improvement. It has hugely improved our quality of life too.”

Coun John Stirling, cabinet member for sustainable development, added: “In North Tyneside, we are committed to tackling fuel poverty and helping our residents take advantage of our scheme.

“This initiative with Warm Zone can provide households with full or partial grants for a range of energy efficiency measures.

“I am delighted Mr and Mrs Prosser have benefitted from the scheme and I would urge those who haven’t already to find out if they’re eligible.”

To find out if you are eligible call Warm Zone on 0800 0199 969 or email enquiries@warmzones.co.uk
