Kids brave weather for sandcastle competition
WET weather did not stop play at the second annual Whitley bay Sandcastle Competition.
Around 50 families braved the rain to carefully create sand sculptures, which were built in a variety of shapes including a racing car, classic castles and the eventual winner, a castle in the shape of the FA Vase.
The competition was organised by North Tyneside Council, in partnership with Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade.
Coun Glynis Barrie, cabinet member for community services, said: "It was great to see so many people getting involved, especially given the weather.
"I met people taking part from Canada and Italy and it's heartening to see them enjoying our coast and the events we stage."
Bill Midgley, chairman of Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade, said: "We were thrilled with the turn out of people despite the unfortunate weather on Sunday.
"Over 50 families came along and had lots of fun building some fantastic sandcastles.
"It was wonderful to see families spending quality time together and enjoying our beautiful coastline here in North Tyneside.
"A replica of Whitley Bay's FA Vase trophy was the clear winner along with several well-deserved runners up who left happy with vouchers to spend in selected shops within Whitley Bay."
As well as local families taking part in the event, the group of Italian teenagers from earthquake hit L'Aquila currently staying at the Northumbria School of English also tried out their sand building skills.
Prizes included a 50 gift voucher to spend in Whitley Bay shops, while free child tickets were donated by the Blue Reef Aquarium.
