Young football fans were given a surprise treat when they visited Tynemouth Long Sands on Wednesday.

A trip to the beach for some children turned into a day to remember when they got up close with Newcastle United players.

The first team squad – along with manager Alan Pardew and coaches John Carver, Andy Woodman and Steve Stone – had been on the beach as part of their pre-season fitness training programme.

They swapped the green grass of their Benton training base for the golden sands of Tynemouth in what has become an annual pre-season visit.

And some youngsters were able to join in a kick about before the training session began and stayed on to watch their heroes while players signed autographs.

Despite the serious nature of the session, the players took part in a game of head tennis with young striker Adam Campbell tweeting: “Good day down the beach with the lads..head tennis champs”.

One United fan who saw the training session, Pete Dunn, of Tynemouth, said: “It was nice to see Alan Pardew join in a game of beach football with some local kids.”
