Motorists are being warned about major roadworks due to start on a key road junction next week.
Major work to improve traffic flows on the A188 Benton Lane will start on Wednesday, August 13.
The existing roundabouts at Four Lane Ends and Goathland Avenue will be removed and replaced with traffic signals while traffic lights will also be installed on the roundabout at the access to Quorum and Balliol business parks.
The work is being carried out after North Tyneside Council secured £2.2m funding from the Department for Transport.
In a separate scheme, funded by Bellway Homes, work will take place to improve junctions to allow for increased traffic from the new housing development at Whitehouse Farm, West Moor.
A new roundabout at the estate’s entrance will be created while the existing roundabouts at West Moor and Weetslade will be upgraded.
Coun Frank Lott, cabinet member responsible for economic development, said: “It’s vital that these essential works are carried out to improve the road network in the area.
“By carrying out this work we will improve road safety, minimise congestion, enhance walking and cycling facilities as well as support public transport movements in the Four Lane Ends and Benton Lane areas.”
The first phase of the work to upgrade the Goathland Avenue/West Farm Avenue junction and improve the Quorum Business Park/Balliol Business Park roundabout is due to start next week and expected to be completed in March next year.
Work at the Four Lane Ends roundabout is scheduled to start in the Autumn.
Construction work on the highways will be taking place outside peak hours between 9.30am and 3pm with some limited night working. The roads will remain open but most approaches to the junctions will be reduced to a single lane.
