Man arrested after pedestrian is hit by car

A man has been arrested after an elderly woman was hit by a car.

An 82-year-old woman was hit by a car just after 9am on Saturday, May 31, opposite Eastbourne House Care Home on The Links, Whitley Bay.

She was taken to the RVI in Newcastle where she remains in a critical but stable condition.

Police arrested and bailed a 42-year-old man on Tuesday on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and police still want anyone who was in the Links area and who witnessed the collision to contact them with any information.

Motor Patrols Sergeant Jason Ryder said: “One man has been arrested in connection with the incident but we still need to hear from anyone who was in the area on Saturday morning and who witnessed the collision.

“We know there was an event taking place on the sea front that morning and there were lots of people in the area.

“We are really keen to hear from anyone who was at the event and who might have seen anything. I’d ask that if anyone has any information that they think could help us to get in touch and speak to us.

“The woman remains in hospital and my thoughts are with her and her family.”

Anyone who was in the area at the time or anyone with any information about the collision should call police on 101, quoting log number 471 of 31/05/14.
