A new piece of artwork is taking pride of place in Mayor Norma Redfearn’s office.

Mrs Redfearn was visibly moved when she was presented the artwork by Maria Foy, who has profound disabilities and attends the Percy Hedley Centre in Forest Hall.

The 24-year-old created Spiral Planet for the mayor after meeting her, using state-of-the-art soundwave technology and vibrations to create a visual red images.

Mrs Redfearn, who will hand the piece in her office at Quadrant, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed by this stunning piece and so I’m honoured to accept it from Maria.

“When she asked what my favourite colour is and said she would make me something for my office I had absolutely no idea it would be so incredible.

“I’ve seen some lovely work by famous artists in galleries around the world and this is up there with the best of them.

“It’s beautiful, intriguing and totally unique ... very like Maria herself.”

Maria produced the work in the impressive i-Muse studio at the Centre’s Speech and Language Department.

Chief Executive of the Percy Hedley Foundation, Carole Harder, said: “We were delighted that we could present the Mayor with such a unique piece of art that she can showcase the work of Maria and the foundation.

“Here at Percy Hedley we have a motto of ‘Achievement for All’ and we strive to ensure that everyone who comes here has great opportunities in life however severe their disabilities.

“We are one of the first centres in the north east to have this incredible i-Muse technology which is very empowering.

“It’s so sensitive that it can pick up the smallest movements, even the blink of an eye. So, for the first time in their lives our users can do what many of us take for granted – compose a picture and take it home to their families.”
