Freemasons from Wallsend have donated £1,000 to North Tyneside General Hospital to help people receiving treatment for breast cancer.

The Wallsend Masonic Hall Company held a social evening to raise the money, which will be spent on a portable ultrasound machine, after a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Organiser George Fenwick said: “The facilities at our local hospital are second to none, however, we are delighted that the money will be used to improve these even further.”

Amanda Walshe, specialist breast cancer nurse, said: “Being diagnosed and receiving treatment for breast cancer is an extremely distressing time for patients and their families, and the new equipment will help to speed up the diagnosis, something we know will be of huge benefit to patients.”
