A North Shields man has swapped the Gunner pub for a place of his own half way around the world.
After working for more than 12 years as a deck officer with Maersk, Matthew Doyle has bought a share in an Australian pub in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.
The 24-hour bar, called ‘G’Day Mate’, is situated in the centre of the city and is popular as a stop off for backpackers as it is close to the Siem Reap world heritage site.
Matthew, who has been in Cambodia for more than a year, has also been promoted to player/manager of his local football team the Sihanoukville Lions, one of 11 teams in the Sihanoukville football league.
Matthew’s father Wilf, who regularly travels out to Cambodia, said: “Any visitors, especially from the north east, can be assured of a friendly welcome while any football news from here would be appreciated.”
