A Metro footbridge in the borough will be closed for six weeks to allow for essential repair work to take place.
The pedestrian walkway linking Marmion Terrace and Norham Road in Monkseaton, will be removed for renovation and repainting from Sunday, July 20.
Nexus said it has planned the work to coincide with the school summer holiday periodas the footbridge is well used by parents and children to access a number of local schools, including Whitley Bay High School and Marden Bridge Middle School.
The work is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the new school term in September.
During the work, alternative access over the Metro line will be available via the main road bridge in Front Street/Marine Avenue in Monkseaton, or Marden Road in Whitley Bay town centre.
A temporary road closure will be in place in Norham Road on July 20 from 6am to 6pm, and again on August 24, to allow the bridge to be lifted back in place.
