Muffin the dog is rescued by coastguards

MUFFIN the dog had a close encounter of the watery kind on Monday, when he slipped off the cliff near Seaton Sluice.

At 11.52am, Humber Coastguard received a 999 call from the distressed owners of a dog reporting that their animal had gone over the cliff at Browns Point near Seaton Sluice.

Coastguard Cliff Rescue Teams from Blyth and Newbiggin were able to reach the Staffordshire bull terrier on a ledge half way down the cliff.

The dog was placed in a dog rescue bag and lowered to the beach below, and owners Annelise and Lucy Home, from West Moor, were reunited.

Alex Harrison at Humber Coastguard said: "Dog owners can avoid losing their precious pets by keeping dogs on leads near cliff edges."
