Museums in line for share of £20m fund
TWO museums in North Tyneside look set to benefit from a grant worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Tyne and Wear Museums, the public-sector organisation that runs Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend and the nearby Stephenson Railway Museum in North Shields, has been successful in its bid to the Arts Council England for a share of a £20m kitty.
Funding has been offered to 16 applicants, but the total amount of cash requested is around £23.5m – £3.5m more than is available.
Over the coming weeks, the final amount awarded to each organisation for the next three years will be confirmed.
Ged Bell, chairman of Tyne and Wear Museums joint committee, said: “This is excellent news, and we are delighted that this considerable investment from Arts Council is being made in our museums and galleries, recognising the important role they play in the social, cultural and economic make-up of our region.”
Iain Watson, director of the museum service, added: “We are confident that we can deliver Arts Council’s goals, and we are looking forward to continuing to make a difference in people’s lives through providing quality museum and archive services.”
