New green awards for businesses

A NEW award scheme is being launched to encourage businesses and organisations to be proud of their green credentials.

The new North Tyneside Carbon Reduction Awards, developed by the Green North Tyneside Partnership, will help companies cut their carbon footprint and energy costs.

There are three levels – bronze, silver and gold – so businesses can self-assess which stage they are at, although earning a Gold award will require a site visit.

Mayor Linda Arkley said: “The accreditation scheme is a way in which our local companies can show their green credentials in participating and tackling climate change, through positive carbon emissions reductions.

“It’s about turning beginners into winners by allowing participants to progress in a step-by-step approach to give a detailed understanding of energy and carbon reduction opportunities. There will be benefits for the businesses by reducing their energy costs and they will contribute to a reduction in the borough’s carbon footprint.”

To achieve the bronze level, companies will need to conduct an energy consumption review and use carbon conversion data to assess their carbon footprint.

For silver, they will also need to produce a simple carbon reduction plan, train staff, and invest in energy efficient equipment.

And for gold, companies will also need to demonstrate a CO² reduction, and publish a carbon reduction report.
