New hotel is welcome addition to tourism growth
THE new Jurys Inns hotel set for NewcastleGateshead will boost the tourism economy in the 'twin cities' and capitalise on some of the 19 million visitors that flock to the destination, according to destination marketing agency NewcastleGateshead Initiative.
The hotel, which will be based on the quayside in Gateshead to the east of the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, will have 200 rooms. It will be Jurys Inns' second in NewcastleGateshead, with the other located in the St James' Gate development, near the Redheugh Bridge.
The Irish hotelier said the existing hotel had been so popular with visitors that it was keen to expand further in NewcastleGateshead.
David Malanaphy, general manager at Jurys Inn Newcastle, said: "The tourism market in NewcastleGateshead is buoyant, borne out by the success of our present hotel and the growth in visitor numbers to the destination.
"We offer great value for money and appeal to both leisure and business tourists being positioned at the premium end of the budget market. "
2009 advance bookings within city-centre hotels are already up on 2008 by an average of five per cent, according to recent research*, with May and June 2009 performing especially well with room bookings 12 per cent and nine per cent up on 2008 respectively.
David Malanaphy added: "Value for money is a key consideration for visitors in the current economic climate and the present strength of the Euro compared with Sterling means that overseas and particularly Irish visitors will see their money go much further when they travel and stay here."
Andrew Dixon NewcastleGateshead Initiative (NGI) chief executive said: "The decision by Jurys Inn to invest in a second hotel in Gateshead shows the confidence which international hotel operators have in the tourism and business growth of NewcastleGateshead.
"NGI's research shows that demand for hotel growth has never been higher in the 'twin cities' and the Jurys development will be another boost to our buoyant Irish market.
"There has been a natural growth in new hotel product in NewcastleGateshead with 42 per cent increase in hotel beds in the last five years.
"New high-quality brands, including Jurys Inn, Crowne Plaza and Staybridge Suites are all investing in NewcastleGateshead and there will more choice than ever for visitors.
"Other hotels such as Thistle, Copthorne and Newcastle Marriot MetroCentre have been investing heavily in improved facilities. The city has some of the highest occupancies in the country."
The new Jurys Inn on South Shore Road in Gateshead will be only a ten-minute walk from Newcastle city centre and even closer to Quayside bars and restaurants. Staybridge Suites Newcastle, the 128-suite extended stay hotel, recently announced they are due to open in April this year.
