A former events team member from Whitley Bay is celebrating the start of a new career as a Royal Navy officer.

Midshipman Joseph Jeffrey was among the latest cadets who marked their formal commissioning as an officer on parade at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) in Devon.

To earn his place on the parade ground, Joseph completed an intensive 30-week training course, split into three ten-week phases.

The first two took place predominately at the world renowned college and the final phase on board one of the Royal Navy’s newest Type 45 destroyers HMS Duncan.

He said: “I have absolutely loved every single part of my training.

“It’s been very challenging both physically and academically with many ups and downs.

“Although at times it’s been hard but I’ve remained focused on my goal throughout.

“I particularly enjoyed the boat training on the river Dart and also the strategic studies lectures.

“Overall I’ve met some fantastic friends who will stay with me throughout my career and I am looking forward to beginning the next part of my training at HMS Raleigh.”
