New virtual community for residents

A NEW virtual Neighbourhood Watch scheme is now available for part of the borough, and police are calling on local residents to get involved.

Like a normal Neighbourhood Watch scheme, residents in the Whitley Lodge area will be provided with information about local policing and crime matters, but they will be able to receive information easily and conveniently through smart phones and e-mails.

Residents can sign up to receive the regular news updates, which will provide information about issues in the area.

It also gives them information about who their local neighbourhood officers are and how to get in touch.

The scheme has already been successfully launched in Shiremoor, and now the neighbourhood sergeant is keen to role out the initiative across all sectors of North Tyneside.

Sergeant Jonathan May, of the Whitley Bay neighbourhood policing team, said: “I really do encourage any local resident to sign up to the virtual Neighbourhood Watch.

“Already people are aware of Neighbourhood Watch and this allows people to be involved from the convenience of their smart phone or computer.

“We aim to role out the scheme across the sector should the Whitley Lodge scheme be a success.

“People can sign up to the scheme and will receive up to date and useful information about policing in the area and what actions officers are taking to combat crime and anti-social behaviour.”

Anyone who is interested in signing up to the new virtual Neighbourhood Watch programme can send their details to whitleybay.npt@northumbria.pnn.police.uk quoting VNW.
