A CULLERCOATS teenager has celebrated his birthday by joining his two brothers as a member of the village’s lifeboat crew.

Curtis Dunn turned 17 on Sunday, February 10, and immediately became a volunteer with the RNLI Cullercoats lifeboat, where older brothers Ben and Ross were already stationed.

Cullercoats is one of only a few RNLI stations in the UK to have three brothers as active volunteer crew members.

Ben, 24, a company director, has been a volunteer for 18 months, and Ross, who works for Ben at his air conditioning company, is 22 with three years’ service.

Curtis is a student at Newcastle College studying engineering.

All live in Cullercoats and their interest in being crew members stemmed from their time spent on the beach when they were children.

With the RNLI station next to the beach their curiosity led to regular visits and over time they got to know the crew and their interest grew.

Their mum Liz said: “I took the boys down to the beach at every opportunity when they were kids.

“They loved visiting the station and were fascinated when the boat was launched by the tractor into the sea.

“Whenever they went to the station they were always made welcome and encouraged to see what the RNLI was all about.

“It obviously has had a positive effect on their lives and I’m proud of all of them helping saving lives at sea.”

Cullercoats leading helmsman Peter Clark said: “Curtis has shown a great deal of commitment to the RNLI in order for him to be fully trained and ready to be a volunteer crew member on his 17th birthday, which is the youngest age one can be registered.

“I’m sure he will be, like his brothers, a real asset to RNLI Cullercoats.”
