On the road to success with repairs

HUNDREDS of potholes in the borough have been repaired following damage caused in the recent winter weather.

Since the adverse weather conditions hit last week, routine inspections of North Tyneside’s highway network have been suspended.

Instead, highways inspectors have been carrying out daily checks for potholes and areas where surface cracks are developing on main routes, with 763 being identified and repaired.

The council said any potholes identified are being filled within two days, wherever possible, while cracked road surfaces are being logged for future repairs.

The new partnership between North Tyneside Council and Capita Symonds has also seen an increase of staff, with two extra supporting engineers and a senior highways officer joining the previous four highways inspectors.

Mayor Linda Arkley said: “I know that the maintenance of roads and pavements is a top priority for residents, which is why I’ve pledged additional investment in this area.

“During the winter weather, hundreds of potholes have been identified and repaired on our main roads.

“It’s an example of how our partnership with Capita Symonds is delivering some real benefits for residents.

“Because we now have a larger inspection team, potholes are being spotted earlier which means they can be repaired sooner too.”

Between December 17 and January 25 there were 755 road inspections identifying 163 defects.

Any residents can report potholes by contacting 0345 200 0103 or by completing an online form at www.northtyneside.gov.uk
