Oui oui, the project is a big success
A GROUP of French guests have visited North Tyneside to thank the borough for taking part in a successful European project.
Over the last five years, 60 students from Sophie Germain High School in France have been finding out what it is like to live and work in the borough.
And to mark the fifth anniversary of North Tyneside Council’s involvement in the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, the school’s staff and pupils visited North Tyneside.
A celebration event was held at Wallsend Town Hall, where the school’s deputy principal Sandrine Nisi thanked the authority and 60 local businesses who have supported the initiative.
The project is part of the European Commission’s Lifelong Learning Programme, designed to build a skilled workforce through European partnerships.
Its aim is to bolster the competitiveness of the European labour market by helping European citizens to acquire new skills, knowledge and qualifications and have them recognised across borders.
Mayor Linda Arkley said: “I am delighted that Madame Nisi has been able to visit North Tyneside.
“It is fantastic that with the support of local businesses, the council has been able to support the pupils in broadening their understanding, knowledge and skills.
“As well as helping the young people, the project plays an important role in not just encouraging tourism within our borough but also attracting skilled workers of the future.”
The students undertook placements including working in retail and commercial businesses plus various council departments.
And now another 13 students are embarking on their work experience in the borough.
