A LORRY driver had a lucky escape after his vehicle overturned near the Tyne Tunnel on Friday morning.

The vehicle had been heading north towards the A19 when it crashed at the roundabout at the junction between the A193 and the A19 northbound.

The accident happened just before 10am and left the roundabout closed, although police officers were able to divert motorists into Wallsend.

Emergency services were able to free the driver from the lorry, but a spokesman at the scene said it would take six hours to remove the vehicle as specialist equipment was needed.
