Partnership gets new hub

A community initiative aiming to bring together residents, visitors and businesses in Whitley Bay has moved into a new location for the summer.

The Whitley Bay Big Local Partnership – a £1m Big Lottery funded community-led initiative – will take over the premises in Park View, previously occupied by Blueberry Square, as a ‘pop up’ shop hub.

The retail unit will provide a base for the volunteers and all those interested in coming together to help suggest and facilitate ways in which small and inexpensive changes or actions can help transform the look and feel of the town.

Local groups can also meet and host activities while those in and around the town can drop in to find out what the Big Local is about.

A wish and pledge wall will give local people the opportunity to share details of what they themselves are planning or are doing already.

Visual interpretations of how the town could look with small changes to planning permissions and the way the community and local authority look after their own buildings, gardens and open spaces will also be on display.

John Clavering, volunteer for Whitley Bay Big Local, said: “We are delighted to be able to throw open the doors to our very own shop, which will act as a hub over the summer for information about everything that we are doing both as a project but also as a community as a whole.

“It will provide a fantastic opportunity for anyone connected to the town to come down and chat to the volunteers so they can find out more about what is going on, the work we are all doing together and be inspired to get more involved themselves.”
