People sign up to scheme for emergency support

DOZENS of people have signed up to a scheme which provides support to carers in an emergency.

The Carers' Emergency Break Scheme, created by North Tyneside Council, provides up to 48 hours free home support when a carer is unable to carry out their usual role as a result of an emergency.

Since the service went live on April 20, a total of 30 carers have fully registered to benefit from the scheme.

A further 90 have contacted the council, which is working with them to develop a bespoke emergency plan.

Most have also been provided with additional advice and information to support them.

Coun Mary Glindon, cabinet member responsible for adult social care, said: "I'm delighted that this service is proving so valuable to local carers.

"It offers real reassurance that help and support will be provided in times of crisis."

Among those to benefit is Martin Armstrong, of West Monkseaton, who cares for his wife.

He said: "I think it's an excellent service. Thanks to the support I've had it feels like I've been able to raise my head and breathe."

The service runs 24-hours a day and is available to carers living in the borough.

The council's service co-ordinator works with carers to create an individual emergency plan, which can be activated by the carer when they quote a unique reference number.

A social care assessment is not required for the scheme, only the contact details of the carer, the person they car for and the support provided.
