A NEW leading helmsman has been appointed at Cullercoats RNLI.

Peter Brunton Clark follows a family tradition which goes back three generations in being a member of the volunteer RNLI crew at Cullercoats.

The 35-year-old has been a crew member for 18 years, the last ten as a helmsman, although he was first introduced to the RNLI by his family aged 12.

Peter, who lives in Cullercoats, is a seventh generation local fisherman.

His father and grandfather were also members of the crew at Cullercoats, and his great uncle George Brunton, who was coxswain, unfortunately lost his life with five others in a storm whilst on exercise back in 1939.

He has attended more than 100 service calls during his time with RNLI Cullercoats.

Peter said: “I feel privileged and honoured to continue the strong traditions of not only my family connections with the RNLI but also the traditions of Cullercoats station.

“I am proud to have this position appointed to me and I will endeavour to uphold the duties that go with this responsibility.”
