Police issue warning on bogus callers

RESIDENTS are being warned to be on their guard for bogus officials and sneak-in burglars.

The warning comes after two incidents where women tried to trick their way into homes in the Wideopen area.

On Thursday, December 20, a woman knocked on the door of a house in Rayleigh Drive and told the elderly occupant that she was in need of assistance.

She tried to get into the house but was refused access and left.

Police believe she may have tried the same thing at other houses in the street. The woman is described as being in her 30s, quite tall, with short dark hair and wearing a long coat or dress.

On Saturday, January 5, a woman gained entry to the home of an elderly woman in Rayleigh Drive by pretending to be her carer.

She was in the house for around ten minutes and after she left, the occupant found her handbag had been stolen.

The woman is described as being white, aged 30 to 40, and of slim build. She was wearing a blue waterproof jacket with the hood up.

North Tyneside Chief Inspector Mandy Shea said: “If anyone has any information about these incidents I’d ask them to contact police as soon as possible.

“I would also advise people that if anyone comes to their door who they are unsure about, they should not let them inside their home. Always ask to see identification – genuine callers will not mind.

“If you are in any doubt as to who they are then don’t let them in your home and contact police straight away. We will always come and check callers out and make sure they are not trying to commit offences or target vulnerable people.”

To report suspicious callers ring 101.
