Police piece together murder victim's last movements

THE LAST known movements of murder victim Andrew Smart have been pieced together by detectives investigating his death.

Andrew Smart, 47, was found in his flat in Sibthorpe Street in North Shields on Sunday February 28 at 6.30pm.

And police have now revealed that he was last seen three days before on Thursday February 25, walking alone in North Shields with facial injuries they believe occurred some days previously.

It has become clear that Mr Smart was in Saville Street at 8.26pm on his own, and ten minutes later on Rudyerd Street at 8.35pm where he was walking towards his home.

But the last time he was seen alive was later that night at 10.38pm where he was seen on Saville Street West.

A post mortem revealed that Mr Smart died after subsequently being violently attacked and beaten.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Bent, of the Major Investigation Team said: "This information shows Mr Smart's last movements as far as we know.

"We are still asking for help from the public and want to hear from anyone who saw him after 10.38pm on Thursday, February 25.

"These facial injuries were clearly visible and people who passed him in the street or stopped and talked to him would have seen and noticed them.

"That evening he was wearing a bright electric blue zip-up fleece with the Italian flag on the left breast and the Italia motif, and he was wearing dark coloured trouser bottoms.

"He was also seen that evening carrying a bag which possibly contained food or drink, and we want to hear from anyone who saw him shopping for this.

"If you have any information at all about Mr Smart's movements from Thursday evening onwards please do contact us.

"Detectives are still keen to talk to people who knew him and we urge any friends or acquaintances who have not yet come forward, for whatever reason, to do so now.

"Even if you think what you have to say isn't important, please let us make that decision.

"It could make a real difference to our investigation.

"Please be assured that all information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Northumbria Police 0191 295 6946 or text 07786 200 814 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
