Producing tasty treats as food festival returns to town

Food lovers are in for a treat this weekend as Tynemouth Food Festival returns in a new venue.

The popular event will be held in the grounds of Tynemouth’s historic Priory and Castle over Saturday, May 10, and Sunday, May 11, where there will be a feast of culinary fare following the success of previous years.

With the support of North Tyneside Council and Brannen and Partners, the festival, organised by the Tynemouth Business Forum, has taken advantage of the new spectacular location to put on an event to rival the previous years.

Food lovers can expect a double-sized helping of tasty treats as this celebration of the region’s culinary heritage brings together local celebrity chefs and producers and a range of other activities.

Joining the celebrations will be a host of well-known regional chefs and restaurateurs including John Calton of the newly opened The Staith House on North Shields Fish Quay, Dan Duggan head chef at Blackfriars in Newcastle and Dave Coulson head chef and partner at Peace and Loaf, Jesmond, all showcasing their favourite dishes on the festival’s demonstration stage.

With 50 market stalls, 17 street food vendors, preparing food from around the world and the Grand Hotel’s Copperfield bar in conjunction with Cullercoats Brewery providing the bar, this year’s festival has something for all tastes.

The festival will also raise money for Luke’s Lifelong Labour – a fund set up for Luke Collins, from Holystone, who is suffering from a brain tumour.

Sally Craigen, chair of both the Tynemouth Business Forum and the food festival committee, said: “We are delighted to be raising money this year for Luke’s Life Long Labour. Luke is a remarkable little boy with an amazing family.

“He has suffered a lot during his short life so far but incredibly he keeps on smiling.”

“This year the festival has a new venue and this has enabled us to make it even bigger and better, however we are also having to charge a small admission fee, but we do feel that with the programme this year it will be fantastic value.”

Sally added: “Tynemouth Food Festival is the perfect opportunity for foodies to come and pay homage to this region’s superb home grown and home produced food and drink.”

Among the producers taking part this year are Swallow Fish Limited, Geordie Bangers, Posh Pots, Yummy Things, Boda Home, Hallsford Farm Produce and Real Nice Ice Company.

Street food vendors will include Las Paellaras, Monsieur Crepe, Tasty Thai Deli, Safari Event Catering, Burritto Street and Wheatberry offering a range of global and vegetarian and vegan cuisines.

Tickets for the festival can be bought online from.tynemouthfoodfestival.co.uk at £2.50 or on the day for £3.50.
