Pupils celebrate centenary

TEN pounds per child was the funding provided to the contractors to build the King Edward School for 1,300 pupils completed in 1909.

This is just one of the facts the current pupils of the North Shields school discovered when they researched their history as part of their centenary celebrations.

With help from the local studies team at North Shields Library they have had access to many old maps and documents to help them compare life then and now.

Many special events are planned for the celebration, including an Edwardian school day with children and staff in costume, a music evening, a circus day, a special edition of the school newspaper and an Edwardian School Fete on from 2pm until 4pm on Saturday, July 4.

Head teacher Nina Brown said: "King Edward has been an important part of the community for a long time, we would love family and friends,

past and present to join in our celebrations.

"We have been amazed at the number of people who have been in touch

from all over the world with links to both the old infant and junior schools, many through the Friends Reunited website."

The school will also be offering tours of the building from 10am to 12 noon on the morning of July 4, and there will be lots of photographs, memorabilia and the original log books on display.

It is hoped that former staff and pupils will come along to visit to bring back memories of their school days, and for anyone with stories or photographs to share, to contact the school in Preston Avenue.
