Youngsters in Whitley Bay are learning how to cook authentic Indian meals.
Asu Miah, owner of Indian takeaway Ellachi, is serving up cooking demonstrations to pupils at Southridge, Marine Park, Rockcliffe and Holywell Village First Schools that teach children the ingredients that go into making a Chicken Bhuna – the simple base of every curry.
Pupils learn about the origins of the spices and herbs and are taught their Indian and English names.
Asu Miah said: “The children are going home and talking about us. They are so interested in learning about the culture and how the food is made.
“The teachers and parents think it is a great idea and we have already received lots of requests from other schools asking us to demonstrate to their children. If you can get children interested in trying new flavours and spices at a young age, when they grow up they won’t become fussy eaters.
“When we teach them about the ingredients that go into our food, it gets them excited about cooking healthy home-made meals from scratch. They can see how easy it is to create tasty food.”
