Pupils at a Whitley Bay school signed up to take part in a world record attempt.

Staff and students at Monkseaton Middle School, in Vernon Drive, took part in the Guinness World Record attempt for the most number of people singing and signing the same song at the same time last Wednesday.

They were led by Year 5 pupil Danny Murphy, who is profoundly deaf, with the youngsters spending a few weeks learning the song.

The sign2sing 2014 event was also raising
money for SignHealth,
the national healthcare charity supporting deaf children and adults.

Each pupil donated £1 to wear a scarf on the day, like event mascot Olli the Monkey, while there was also a cake sale and a number of other fundraising events taking place on the day.

The school already has a deaf club which meets every lunchtime, where pupils
are able to learn sign language, and staff said that had helped them prepare for the
challenge.
