Pupils take over lab

editorial image

PUPILS at Monkseaton Middle School are trying their hand at running the school’s science lab.

The school’s head of science Gillian Whitmell wanted to include the pupils in the running and organisation of the lab to help them develop their knowledge of the subject.

The youngsters went through an interview process and the successful candidates were made science technicians, whose responsibilities include helping out in the lab at lunchtimes and getting involved in science workshops.

Gillian said: “The science technicians’ input is invaluable and they are learning about the processes and procedures of maintaining a science lab. I can already see improvements in their knowledge and abilities in science.”
