Speeding drivers in an area of North Tyneside are being targeted by police following concerns raised by local residents.

Officers are responding to reports of drivers going at excessive speeds by using monitoring equipment in the Monkseaton area, including Relton Terrace, to check driving speeds at different times of the day, so they can assess the problem.

Whitley Bay Neighbourhood Sergeant Jonathan May said: “Local people are rightly concerned about drivers using excessive speed in an area where the speed limit is 20mph.

“To deal with this we have been carrying out this operation, aimed at putting the brakes on speeding drivers to safeguard other road users.

“This particular stretch of road is a main route to Valley Gardens Middle School and Whitley Bay High School and parents tell us they are concerned for the safety of children who use this road on their walk to school.

“We want to reassure residents we are taking action to prevent further problems with these roadside checks.

“Some drivers we have stopped and spoken to were unaware that their speed was excessive, but they have been told to slow down, or face further action.”
