A Whitley Bay-based umbrella charity is celebrating a record month for distributing knitwear locally and overseas.
Last month, the Angels of the North distributed 5,000 items of knitwear to impoverished families in North Tyneside, Africa and India.
The garments included scarves, bootees, hats, jumpers, cardigans, tights, blankets, gloves and mittens for children and adults.
The charity’s honorary chief executive officer Barbara Connors-Fowler said: “The public responded magnificently to our appeals for wool that have resulted in the most wonderful colour range of garments imaginable, knitted with love by four volunteer knitting groups in the area.
“In Africa and India it is heart-warming to see young children in particular, hugging knitwear they had just been given because it was the very first item of new clothing that they have ever owned.
“They treasure the knitwear so much that they take it everywhere with them.”
