Reducing the red tape for adoption
WORK is taking place to improve adoption rates in North Tyneside.
A new action plan, implemented by North Tyneside Council’s adoption service over the coming year, aims to reduce red tape, tackle unnecessary delays and place children with permanent families quicker.
Improvements include fast-tracking applicants including previous foster carers and adopters, and closer working between the service, care teams and family courts, to remove system and admin hold-ups.
The number of children placed with adoptive families in the borough continues to rise, with 20 children adopted in 2011/12 while families have been found for 24 children so far this year.
Mayor Linda Arkley has welcomed the planned improvements, which she hopes will give extra encouragement to new adopters.
“Our adoption team already do a fantastic job in very difficult circumstances to ensure that children are placed with the right families as soon as possible,” she said. “It’s very important we find a match that works for the child and the adopter.
“However, we also recognise that long delays or lengthy checks can be frustrating, so our plan aims to make the best use of resources.
“Adoption can make a huge difference to a child’s life. We need more adopters to come forward.”

The service is recruiting adopters for children of all ages. Training and approval takes eight months, and then adopters are matched with a child.
