Renewed appeal into taxi incident

POLICE have renewed an appeal for witnesses to an incident which saw a borough man fall out of a moving taxi in Newcastle.

Gary McConnell had been in what is believed to be a black taxi in Jesmond Road heading towards Newcastle with a male friend.

The taxi stopped at around 3.50am on Saturday, June 26, and one passenger got safely out.

Moments later, Mr McConnell fell out of the moving taxi near the Swallow Hotel and sustained serious head injuries when he fell.

The 23-year-old was taken to hospital and is still receiving treatment for head injuries in intensive care at Newcastle General Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen the incident, or who found a gent's black leather wallet which was lost around the time of the incident, to get in touch.

Anyone with information should contact Newcastle motor patrols on 03456 043043 ext 62780 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

A 39-year-old Newcastle man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
