A borough journalist has been selected from thousands of applicants as an ‘on-board reporter’ for an ocean race.

Tom Bushell, from North Shields, will join Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing (ADOR) – the Abu Dhabi-backed team – which will contest the 2014-15 round-the-world Volvo Ocean Race, which gets under way from Alicante in Spain in October.

Tom, 31, has been working as a radio journalist in the United Arab Emirates and sealed the coveted post following a series of interviews and sea trial tests.

ADOR skipper, the UK’s double sailing Olympian, Ian Walker, said: “I sailed with Tom in the Solent this summer and more recently in the Hong Kong to Vietnam race, where we encountered some fairly wild conditions and he proved his mettle as a sailor.

“His journalistic abilities were already well established.”

Tom, who started sailing with his family at Tynemouth Sailing Club at the age of 12, will join the team for all of the nine-month race.
